SO, YOU ARE GOING TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC!
We could not be more excited to know that God has brought you here. This page contains information you need to prepare for your upcoming trip. We know you have a lot of questions and we are here to answer them! Please read through all of the information below and complete the necessary step.
Step One: Pray
PRAY for your trip, your leaders, what God will do through you, for our students, teachers, supporters, and our ministry.
Step Two: Complete Mandatory Trip Waiver
In order to be allowed to leave for the mission trip EVERY GROUP MEMBER must have filled out the Mandatory Trip Waiver. Group leaders will be able to see who has filled out waivers and who has not. If there is an emergency in the Dominican Republic, the information on the waiver is what we use to find your information quickly.
Step Three: Read Materials to Prepare for Trip
The Mission Trip Packet contains information about what to expect, what to pack, dress code, and rules for visiting the Dominican Republic. It is incredibly important for every group member read through the packet and ask necessary questions before leaving. We also suggest reading the book When Helping Hurts as a team before departure.
Step Four: Adhere To Financial Deadlines
Makarios staff work closely with your group leaders to make sure we plan each trip well. One way to ensure we are staying on track is to adhere to the financial deadlines given to you by your group leader. Group leaders base the deadlines on information we give them regarding our planning process for mission trips.
You may not book individual flights. You MUST arrive and leave at the same time as the rest of the team. Your group leaders will have the flight itinerary for the group approved by Makarios staff.
OUR MISSION: Makarios is dedicated to meeting the spiritual, physical, emotional and intellectual needs of impoverished people in the developing world through Christ-centered, sustainable education and outreach programs.
LOVE The love of Christ and the Gospel is our foundation for which we provide for the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual needs of our students. The most important way in which we love our students and is by sharing the loving message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, in accordance with Luke 4:18. Our greatest passion is introducing our students and their families to life-changing relationships with Jesus, while acknowledging He alone is capable of meeting their daily needs. We meet our students’ physical needs the Makarios school by providing clean drinking water, vitamins, two hot meals a day, and basic medical care.
EDUCATE We meet educational needs by operating the Colegio Makarios, or Makarios School, instructing children from three different impoverished communities. We provide an excellent, bilingual, private school education to children who would otherwise never have this opportunity. Our students range from pre-k 2 through 4th grade. Core subjects, electives, and extra-curricular subjects and taught by local and missionary staff. As we continue to grow we plan to add an additional grade each year to accommodate students’ educational needs until high school graduation.
EMPOWER We embrace God’s calling to empower the poor and marginalized through the provision of physical and spiritual needs in accordance with what Scripture directs in Proverbs 31:9 and James 2. To address needs outside of the school we work alongside local churches and leaders so as not to create dependency. We facilitate access to major medical care, conduct health awareness programs, train and develop local leaders, and create outreach programs throughout the community. Through education and intentional relationships our students and their families are equipped to be leaders in their own communities.
RELATIONSHIPS THAT EMPOWER: In addition to operating Colegio Makarios, we build relationships with the parents, churches, and community members through the administering of a variety of projects throughout the year, which include:
- Weekly Community Visits
- Summer Soccer Camp
- Relief Projects (flood relief)
- College Scholarships (providing opportunities for locals)
- Health (medical and dental visits)
- Staff Involvement
- Special Projects
