God transforms lives through meaningful relationships.
This is the foundation of how we do ministry. By connecting with people through discipleship, trainings, and classes, we're able to form these relationships. This allows us to intentionally walk with them through life. Being able to invest in their well-being on a daily basis can have a lasting impact. Each ministry within Makarios provides different ways to invest in people and change lives.
Through Family Empowerment, we're able to build lasting relationships with our students’ parents. This program provides trainings, resources, and spiritual guidance to give them tools to parent better, and provide them with more opportunities. Through family empowerment, literacy rates are going up, family conflicts are being resolved, and most importantly, more people are experiencing the love and grace of knowing Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
Going on a group trip is an incredible opportunity to meet people, serve others, and experience life in the Dominican Republic. Group Ministry is driven by people like you offering to give up your time for a week of selfless serving, child-like joy, and building relationships. During the week, groups will go out into communities to learn about life in the DR and minister to and love on people. Groups also help teach VBS and sports camps for students in the communities. Not only is this fun and beneficial for families in the community, but it will leave a lasting impact on you and the way you perceive the world.
Biblical integration is an essential part of how we educate our students. We want them to know who the Lord is and to teach them about His grace and goodness. Discipling students while providing a quality education is a way to give them the resources and tools they need for spiritual growth and success. With these, they'll have opportunities for a promising future and become positive influences in their communities. Students will be equipped to serve Jesus Christ while working to end generational poverty.
Relationships are the glue that holds Makarios together. God moves through people and strengthens gospel-centered friendships. Through the gospel, people from all different backgrounds and parts of the world are able to come together and find common ground. Sponsorships not only provide for the physical needs of our students, but also provide an incredible opportunity for people like you to have a strong, positive relationship with a Makarios student and their family. Sponsorship gives you the opportunity to change someone's life.
The primary reason we exist is to lead people to Jesus and know him as their Lord and Savior. In Matthew 28, Jesus commissions us to go and make disciples among all nations. Together, we’re equipping and empowering people to become Christ-like influences in their communities so that they can share the gospel and make disciples.
Over 30% of the Dominican population lives below the poverty line. For most people living in poverty, it’s rarely believed that having more money or possessions would better their lives. What’s felt is a lack of hope and dignity from not having an education, opportunities, or a relationship with Jesus. This creates a cycle that prevents people from thriving.
Together, we're restoring hope and dignity by providing resources and opportunities for people to thrive, and most importantly, revealing to them that their true hope and value is found in Jesus.
why family empowerment?
why group ministry?
why makarios school?
This is the core of who we are. Together, we are loving students and their families as Christ would love them, educating them so that they have opportunities for a better future, and empowering them so they feel equipped to be Christ-like influences
in their communities.
We accomplish this through four different ministries: Family Empowerment, Group Ministry, The Makarios School, and Sponsorship. Together, through these ministries we’re able to develop relationships, share the gospel, and change lives.
134 families | 7 staff members
The Family Empowerment Program is the newest addition to the Makarios ministries. It was created in 2016 to meet the physical, intellectual, and spiritual needs of families. Several different classes and trainings are offered to parents of our students. Not only are parents given the opportunity to attend trainings and classes, they’re also being discipled by local church leaders and Makarios staff.
367 team members | 9 staff members
Group Ministry started in 2005, only a year after the Makarios School was founded. Teams from the US travel to the DR to serve alongside Makarios in person, see the impact of their partnership, and develop relationships with locals. During their trip, teams hold sports camps and VBS as a way to share the gospel with locals in the surrounding communities.
THE MAKARIOS SCHOOL
200 students | Grades PreK-11th | 40 staff members
The Makarios School was the first of our four ministries. It’s where students receive a faith-based education, meals, and medical care. Our staff is made up of local Haitians, Dominicans, and American missionaries who work alongside each other to educate and disciple our students. This provides our students with an opportunity for a better future.
Sponsorship is how the Makarios School operates. Whether you sponsor a student, class, or local staff member, sponsors like you fund the school and enable it to function. Sponsors are able to form relationships with their students by sending letters and packages, and communicating with them on a regular basis. You can do this online, by mail, or in person! Sponsors who attend Group Ministry trips are usually able to visit with their sponsor student and their family.
Located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, we serve three communities within the town of Montellano: Tamarindo, Pancho Mateo, and Chichigua.
Many families have lived here their entire lives, including generations before them. Each community is unique in its own way. Tamarindo is made up of connected homes that can be accessed through walking down windy paths. This is where the Makarios School is located. Pancho Mateo is where Makarios originally started and resembles a small neighborhood. It’s home to many Makarios staff. Chichigua is a small Haitian community filled with colorful wooden and tin homes. You'll always find precious kiddos running around Chichigua.
There is so much character, charm, and potential for growth within these communities. We love them deeply and pray that, together, God uses us to impact them for generations to come.
